Organized under the Horizon Europe project <strong>VALZEO (GA 101086354)<\/strong>, the event brought together European and Cuban researchers, institutions, and innovation stakeholders to explore sustainable technologies for water treatment and biofuel production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day opened with a warm welcome by <strong>Dr. Vilma Hidalgo de los Santos<\/strong> (Fundaci\u00f3n Universidad de La Habana), followed by a special presentation of the VALZEO project by <strong>Dr. Manuel Valiente<\/strong> (UAB), who outlined the consortium\u2019s mission to transform agro-industrial waste into value-added materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Leonardo Piccinetti<\/strong> (SITES) delivered a keynote on VALZEO\u2019s <strong>circular economy approach<\/strong>, setting the tone for a full day of scientific dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two key technical panels followed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd2c <strong>Panel I \u2013 Raw Material Characterization &amp; Silica Extraction<\/strong>, moderated by <strong>Dr. Roberto Boada<\/strong> (UAB), featured:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Ana Adelfa<\/strong> (IIGranos): Collection and processing of rice husk and ash<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Luis Cepero Casas<\/strong> (EEPFIH): Biomass valorisation in furnaces and gasifiers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Yudith Lugo<\/strong> (EEPFIH): Ash characterization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Yusleydi Enamorado Horrutiner<\/strong> (UH): Silicon extraction for zeolite synthesis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca7 A special intervention was delivered by <strong>Dr. Francesco Fatone<\/strong> (UNIVPM), who addressed the <strong>challenges of circular water treatment management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\uddea <strong>Panel II \u2013 Materials for Water Treatment<\/strong>, moderated by <strong>Dr. Rabdel Ruiz-Salvador<\/strong> (UPO), featured:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Tania Far\u00edas Pi\u00f1era<\/strong> (UH): Synthetic vs. natural zeolites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Menta Ballesteros Martin<\/strong> (UPO): Zeolite catalysts for antibiotic-resistant contaminants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Rabdel Ruiz-Salvador<\/strong> (UPO): Role of simulation in materials science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Roberto Boada<\/strong> (UAB): MOFs in water treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ZPRIME team<\/strong>: LCA and LCC of silica-based processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Josep Tor\u00e0<\/strong> (AERIS): Industrial water treatment technologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The day concluded with a vibrant <strong>Science Caf\u00e9<\/strong>, encouraging open discussion and knowledge sharing between European and Cuban partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dynamic first day reinforced
