The VALZEO project highlights the recent publication of a position paper by Water Europe addressing the future of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD)—a cornerstone of European water policy.
The WFD plays a critical role in ensuring the protection and sustainable management of Europe’s water resources, aiming to achieve good ecological and chemical status for rivers, lakes, and groundwater across Member States.
The position paper comes at a key moment, as the European Commission prepares a review and potential revision of the Directive, with the objective of strengthening water resilience, improving resource efficiency, and aligning water policy with circular economy priorities.
Stakeholders across the water sector emphasise the importance of maintaining strong environmental protections while enabling innovation and industrial development. Ensuring the balance between regulatory simplification and environmental integrity is essential for sustainable growth.
For VALZEO, these developments are highly relevant. The project contributes to EU priorities by developing zeolite-based materials from agricultural waste for water treatment, supporting pollution reduction and circular bioeconomy strategies.
